Culture Assessment

The first step in any performance improvement initiative is to understand the organizational culture by systematically surveying and analyzing its current state. One of the many difficulties is assessing and improving the cultures at multiple facilities in an equitable and consistent manner, especially if the surveys rely upon manual processes. For large health systems, the patient safety survey process can quickly become overwhelming, yet the results are vital to maintain accreditation with The Joint Commission’s Leadership Standard (LD.03.01.01)* which requires regular evaluation of the culture of safety and quality using valid and reliable tools such as the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) Survey on Patient Safety Culture. This tactic, the AHRQ Survey on Patient Safety Culture, helps hospitals, nursing homes, physician offices, and clinics understand and identify cultural opportunities for improvement.
